I feel both overworked and like I’m not working hard enough. Is there a way to feel ‘good enough’?

“I have a habit of overworking to feel better about how insecure and inferior I feel. So I go back to what I know – my career.”

That sentence stopped me. Because many high-achieving professionals quietly live this same pattern. From the outside, it looks like ambition. From the inside, it often feels like never doing enough, struggling to switch off, and constantly being on edge during downtime.

In the short term, overworking helps lower that uneasy feeling in your body. Instead, you feel productive. You get praise. You even feel “okay” for a bit.

But your nervous system is learning a habit you are creating: “when I feel not good enough, I must push forward and I must do more.”

Over time, this creates an unhelpful cycle:

  • Your sense of worth becomes tied to output
  • Rest starts to feel uncomfortable
  • Anxiety creeps in

The important reframe: overworking is not a flaw. It’s an adaptation. At some point, achievement became linked to safety and self-worth. So when insecurity rises, your system reaches for the quickest relief: work harder, stay busy, avoid discomfort.

The goal isn’t to lower your ambition. It’s to build more ways to feel steady, so start small:

  • Notice the feelings before the work surge
  • Separate worth from productivity: my work is something I do, not who I am
  • Practice micro-pauses: brief moments of slowing down teach your body it’s safe to stop

As this shifts, work becomes more intentional, evenings feel quieter, and achievements feel satisfying without exhaustion. You won’t lose your edge – you just stop needing to overwork to feel good enough.
