I cannot make decisions with any kind of certainty. What can I do to change this?

Decision-making can feel simple but for many fast-paced industry professionals, it isn’t. You weigh options, plan, and double-check… yet something still feels off. You move things forward, but a quiet tension settles into your chest and back.

Many professionals feel this tension without realizing why. They may appear confident externally, yet internally, they struggle with self-doubt and even physical discomfort.

One client put it perfectly:

“I look for others to confirm that I’m doing the right thing.”

This is the moment the pattern is truly noticed. Seeking external validation works in the short term: a colleague agrees, a mentor reassures, and suddenly the anxiety eases. But relying on others to confirm your decisions teaches your nervous system something unhelpful: If I want to feel certain or safe, I need someone else to approve me.

Here’s a reframe: seeking reassurance isn’t a flaw, it’s an adaptation. Your system learned that leaning on others kept you safe. The goal now is to learn to trust your own judgment.

A few ways to start:

  • Notice the urge for validation. What fear or doubt is triggered before you ask?
  • Check in with yourself first. Pause and ask, “What do I truly think is good for me here?”
  • Practice small independent decisions. Low-stakes choices are perfect training for self-trust.

As this shifts, you’ll notice decisions feel quicker and lighter, your confidence grows, and external reassurance becomes nice-to-have, not essential.

You don’t need to stop listening to others entirely. You simply stop letting your nervous system outsource your inner self trust. Your choices begin to feel like your own, and your career becomes something you own rather than something that owns you.
