How do I know when it’s time for me to end therapy? How do I deal with losing this support system?

If we’ve got to the point where we are reducing sessions then hooray! Well done that you’ve got to this point where we are slowly but surely trying to help you spread your wings and fly. Great therapists will never want you to create a dependency on them, and they will generally support you in your choices to test out your own independence here too.

So how do you know you’re ready?

Day to Day Functioning is Going Well

You will feel like your daily functioning is going well. It isn’t where it once was and your day-to-day functioning is just working for you, and you’re enjoying life’s simple pleasures again.

Not Sure What To Say in Session

Another thing that points to showing that you’re ready to reduce your sessions is that you might not be sure of what to say during your therapy session. Sometimes people can feel this way and it shows that they don’t need as much help at that time with managing day-to-day struggles.

Open and Curious About Your World

You’re not socially isolated and withdrawn and you actually want to explore your world more and get out there more.

This is a great thing. And a sign that your support system and community are a big part of your strength and support.

Reaching Your Goals in Therapy

What is important as you reduce your sessions, is that you need to think about what you want out of the last couple sessions that you have.

What is it that you still want that you have yet to achieve in therapy? What else is left in you that you’re wanting to figure out?

Keep Talking it Through

If you’re scared about reducing sessions and you’re worried about how it’s going to go. Please talk to your therapist!

I know for me, the more we can figure this out together, the more we’ll boost your confidence and help you feel ready for this experience, or alternatively go back to once a week sessions too if that’s what you need or feel comfortable with. There is no rush. There is no set timeframe that you are expected to hit. This is your healing and you going at your pace will give you the most sustainable outcome in the end.

The Importance of Routines

Maintaining all your hard work in session will be all about routines that you have outside of sessions.

As you’re working towards setting up your routines, think about what you do and don’t need. Can you let go of the things you don’t need? If you do have a routine, how is it working for you?

If it’s not working so well, let’s talk about it so we can figure out those routines more so that you feel more ready to close out or reduce sessions to once a month rather than once a week.
