I don’t feel like practicing gratitude but I’ve been told it helps. Does it?

Being grateful is one of those building blocks to finding our healthiest sense of ourselves. Our wellbeing is hugely impacted by how grateful we are.

Sometimes we’ll be in a place where being grateful is really difficult. It’s hard to move beyond trying to find just one thing that you are grateful for. That’s okay because sometimes that’s just the way it is and we’re stuck in a hole.

Sometimes that gratitude can be getting out of bed in the morning and the fact that you have a bed. When you are in the hole, it’s not so easy to see that. When you’re outside of it because you’ve been practicing being grateful for two or three things every day, it’s going to be a bit easier to be grateful for what is in your world. Sometimes that is people or items that have sentimental value. It doesn’t really matter what it is you are grateful for, as long as you’re practicing gratitude – that is most important.

How to Practice Gratitude:

Something you can try and do to build gratitude into your day-to-day life is to choose just three things you are grateful for before you jump out of bed, or maybe when you get into bed. It can be short and sweet, and it will still have a positive impact on your life.

A lot of the time, I’ll finish off my sessions by asking the person I am talking to what three things they are excited for next week and what three things they are grateful for next week. What I’m trying to do is try to help them find something that they are looking forward to – that they hope about in the future and that they are grateful for.

Give it a shot and see if it helps you.
