Lying awake night after night, watching your child struggle to settle, can make you feel powerless. You try everything; routines, comfort, and reassurance but nothing seems to last.
Doubt creeps in. Am I doing something wrong? Will he ever sleep through the night? Is this just who he is?
For many parents of young neurodiverse children, this urge comes from a place of deep exhaustion. You’re not trying to punish your child. You’re trying to protect rest for both your child and yourself, and to support their own ability to manage their emotions.
But for kids with ADHD, sudden changes or rigid expectations around sleep can backfire. Night time wakings aren’t just “bad habits.”
They are signals: the nervous system is alert, the body is overwhelmed, and your child is trying to cope with feelings they can’t yet regulate. Night terrors, nightmares, and difficulty self-soothing are the result of that system struggling to settle, not defiance.
This week in parent support sessions, a parent shared:
“He wakes up screaming multiple times a night. The only way he can calm down is if he’s with me. I feel exhausted and helpless.”
We explored what’s happening underneath the nighttime chaos, and what could actually help him get the rest he needs. Two strategies stood out:
Consistent, calming bedtime rituals: small, predictable actions like dimming the lights, reading a short story, and playing soft music all help the body recognize that it’s time to wind down. Over time, these cues signal safety and prepare the nervous system for sleep.
Comfort objects or verbal cues: a favorite blanket, stuffed animal, or a few words of reassurance can act as an anchor, giving the child a way to self-soothe without relying on a parent’s presence for the entire night. These tools help him feel secure while practicing independence.
The goal isn’t to force sleep, but to create a supportive environment where your child can learn to regulate their body and mind. For the parent, it’s about holding boundaries in a way that’s gentle, consistent, and sustainable.
If nights feel endless and exhausting, therapy and neurodiversity coaching sessions at Warrior Brain can help you understand your child’s sleep patterns and develop strategies tailored to their needs. Because every child deserves rest and every parent deserves relief.
