There are so many options out there for us now – TikTok, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, etc. All great options to distract ourselves from the “hard” of life.
We don’t distract from everything that is going on, but we do often distract ourselves from what is going on inside of ourselves – how we feel. Maybe you received a work email or maybe something frustrating happened to you and instead of dealing with the emotions and the signal that your body is sending you about that situation, you distract yourself by going on to social media. What makes this really challenging is that distraction is not the worst thing in the world but if you repeatedly distract (daily habit), you’re not giving yourself the chance to listen to the signal you are receiving about a certain situation or person.
For example, let’s say you received an email from work that absolutely frustrates you. If you pick up your phone and go straight to social media and don’t deal with that feeling, you’ll be stuck with the same emotions when you put your phone down. That can lead you to blow up at the least expected time because your body will start sending that signal really loudly to get your attention!
Before You Go Onto Social Media
When you get the urge to check your phone or go on social media, PAUSE – and think about what’s happening in your body and try to see what the signal is that your body is sending you, and how you can deal with it vs avoid it.
For example, if you’re feeling frustrated and agitated, what can you do to bring that down instead of going on Twitter because maybe Twitter won’t actually manage those feelings for you – even though you think it will. It might even increase that frustration and agitation!
