inner fight endurance podcast

Understanding Identity

Resources we talked about on the podcast:

Personal Values: This card sort will help you get started on knowing more about what guides you in life.

Other values to add specifically geared towards cultivating a positive identity as an endurance athlete: perseverance, discipline, focus, mental resilience, commitment, hard work ethic, goal setting, teamwork, leadership, dedication, competitive spirit, sportsmanship, fair play, courage, responsibility, self confidence, personal growth, industriousness.

Characteristics: This free survey (Tom loves a survey!) is a scientifically backed survey of character strengths you currently have. It will take you 10 minutes to complete and you’ll have a stronger, more positive sense of who you are as a result of it.

Goal setting: Know what goals you currently have as an endurance athlete. What about your goals are helping you learn more about who you are? What about those goals are not helping you learn more about who you are? What part of what you do is simply because you feel you have to, and what part of what you do is you learning more about yourself?

Speak to your coach about how your training is currently helping you expand as a person and what constricts you. What helps you grow as a triathlete is important – but not at the cost of your other “baskets”.

 Other shared ideas:

Lean on people around you as you work through this, especially when your people are your friends, family, coaches and training buddies. When you look around you and not just at you, you have a greater sense of purpose around who you are and how you fit in and belong. Tom’s reminder to look at the shoes you have in your closet is also a great true north on knowing what you do with your time. Check our your partner’s shoes too for an added bonus!

Keep sharing ideas that work. Make what you do irrelevant. Make who you are relevant.

Bonus for recovery: calm knight weighted blankets

Weighted blankets can be a game changer for endurance athlete’s lifestyle. If you care about recovery and performance, you might be surprised to learn that a simple addition to your sleep routine could make all the difference.

The deep touch pressure provided by the blanket can reduce stress and anxiety, stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, and lead to longer periods of deep sleep, critical for muscle recovery and overall physical health.

By using a weighted blanket while you sleep, you can achieve improved well-being and performance, all with a natural and non-invasive solution. Visit https://warriorbrain.com/weighted-blankets/ for more info.
