Is it normal to not really get excited about anything anymore?

You’re accomplishing so much—hitting goals, meeting deadlines, checking all the boxes. But when you stop to think about your life, there’s this emptiness. You can’t remember the last time you felt truly excited about something, and that scares you.

In high-pressure environments, it’s easy to get caught up in the grind. Your life becomes a series of tasks, deadlines, and responsibilities. Over time, the things that used to light you up—hobbies, dreams, even time with loved ones—start to fade into the background. You’re not a horrible person for feeling this way – you just feel numb right now and that’s part of the place you’re currently in.

This lack of excitement isn’t just a passing phase—it somehow seeps into every area of life. You wake up feeling unmotivated, go through the motions, and wonder why nothing feels as fulfilling as it should. Even when you try to relax or do something that should feel enjoyable, it feels hollow, like you’re disconnected from yourself and your partner. And the worst part? You’re scared this is just how life is now.

This week in session, a client shared, “I have so much that should make me happy—a great job, a beautiful home, and stability in my relationship. But I feel numb. I keep thinking, ‘Is this it? Is this all there is?’”

As we unpacked this, it became clear that their focus on productivity had crowded out their joy. They’d spent so much time chasing success that they’d forgotten how to nurture the parts of their life that made it meaningful—relationships, creativity, and even curiosity – because they were too busy optimizing their time elsewhere.

We started small. They made a list of things that used to excite them when they were younger—everything from baking to riding bikes to playing rugby. Then, we worked on integrating these back into their life and routine, one activity at a time. They began carving out time for themselves, not just to unwind and play, but to reconnect with what made them feel alive. Slowly, that spark of joy within them started to return.
