Why Can’t I Rest Unless I Know I Made an Impact?

You’re not just doing the work. You’re measuring your impact on the world.

For many professionals, finishing a task isn’t enough. You want to know: Did it matter? Did I move the needle? Did it have the impact that I wanted? This isn’t about ego. It’s about making a real difference. You want your output to match the pressure you put on yourself to make something meaningful.

This week in therapy, a client told me, “I always want to know what impact I made. I can’t rest unless I feel like the impact matches the level I expect myself to be at.” They weren’t chasing praise. They were chasing internal proof that their efforts were enough. That they were enough. And when the feedback loop was quiet (no email replies, no team recognition) the doubt crept in. “Did I fall short? Should I have done more?”

We explored the difference between external markers of success and internal markers of impact. Because sometimes the thing you worked hardest on will never be visible to anyone but you. Sometimes the most meaningful shift you create happens quietly in the way someone feels safer, more seen, more capable because of you.

Together, we created a new rhythm: finishing a task, then pausing to name the invisible impact. What value did I bring? What problem did I solve? What tension did I ease? We began measuring impact not by applause, but by how good they felt about their output and effort. Did this reflect who I am and what I stand for? If so, it was enough.
